Course: Wood Carving with Don Powell
Date:12 - 16 April 2010
Cost:$340

This course will cover all aspects of carving and Don will teach through a project from conception to completion covering design, wood selection, tool requirements, sharpening and finishing. For the main project of the week you will have a choice of a horse head, a human head or a figure. During the week there will also be a hand held carving session and for this Don will have a number of suitable projects. For illustrations of some of these see Issue No. 61 of the Australian Wood Review magazine, published in December.
There will be a charge for wood which will be provided for this course.

Don is a Maleny, Queensland, based wood sculptor who displays a deep passion for his work, classically identified by the realism and intricate detail in his carvings. He has a particular affinity for figures but works on a wide range of subjects.
In 1996 Don was awarded a Churchill Fellowship to study teaching methods in Europe. He is now a highly respected teacher, author of articles on woodcarving and has been working on a very special project - St Mary's Cathedral in Sydney.
Some of Don's work displays a combination of a variety of timbers and also metal, stone and jewels for stunning effects of colour and texture. Don's philosophy is that wood fits comfortably with anything, something truly natural, being one of God's greatest gifts to mankind.
